Snoring has been normalized in today’s society, but that does not mean that it should be ignored. Not only does taking care of that raucous rattle you produce while you snooze help your partner (and yourself!) enjoy a longer and better quality of sleep, it can also help you avoid a number of serious health issues.

    Hypertension

Snoring has long been recognized as a warning sign for potential underlying cardiovascular conditions. This is because when you snore, your breathing is forced to come to an abrupt stop. That sudden interruption in your breathing can cause your blood pressure to skyrocket, your oxygen levels to drop, and for the brain to tell your blood vessels to tighten up. But that’s not all. Your blood pressure can stay elevated throughout the day, too. A ten year study published in the European Respiratory Journal found snoring is an “independent risk factor for hypertension” in men who are younger than fifty years of age.

    Stroke

There are a lot of studies which have proven that snoring can increase your risk of a stroke. But one study published in the Journal of Sleep Research in 2003 suggests that it is actually the resulting daytime sleepiness which can increase your chances of suffering from a stroke.

    Type II Diabetes

One of the lesser recognized risks that come with snoring is the risk of developing type II diabetes. When your body is forced to struggle for oxygen, it goes into “fight or flight” mode. This increases your stress levels and in turn, increases your blood glucose levels. This can lead to type II diabetes. One ten year follow-up study which involved nearly 2000 women found that even after taking into consideration a subject’s smoking history, BMI and parental history of diabetes, snoring was still a risk factor for developing type II diabetes.
